pilates Pilates conditioning aims to realign and rebalance the body. Slow flowing movements tone core postural muscles, dramatically improving strength, co-ordination, flexibility, and self-awareness. In pregnancy, pilates conditioning can help to increase stability around joints, which is necessary to support the increased load on these more unstable areas during pregnancy. Existing dysfunctions or weaknesses can become more pronounced with pregnancy and lead to pain or injury in the back, pelvis, ribs or shoulders. A strong core or trunk (i.e. the abdominals, pelvic floor and back muscles) can help protect against this. During a session, exercises to develop a strong core are combined with upper body exercises. Breathing is an integral part of each exercise, helping to focus and co-ordinate the flowing movements. Gaining control of the breath also assists with mobilisation and gentle lengthening movements. During pregnancy correct breathing helps to bring about relaxation and release tension. The benefits gained from Pilates are unique to the individual. However the enjoyment and understanding of Pilates based movements can not only help your baby, but give you the ability to cope with change, keep in touch with your body and enhance recovery after childbirth. Unlike classes, one-to-one sessions can help you with problems specific to your body.
